Total voters In fact, the book of 1 John was written to this point: "These things I have written to you who believe in the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life. We don't get eternal life after we die Now, let's follow this idea to its logical conclusion. If we know we have eternal life when we believe in Jesus, how long does eternal life last?
Can you have eternal life for a year? A week? A day? If words mean anything at all, then eternal life must be eternal. It must last forever! Eternal life by definition cannot be lost. Let's look at it another way. What sin is so big that Jesus' death could not atone for it?
There is none that I know of we'll exclude for the moment the passage of Mark , as it really doesn't apply here. Every sin that man can commit against God and man, even the most heinous was dealt with at the cross of Calvary. If this is so, then what sin can be so bad that it would cause God to "unforgive" that which He has already paid for?
Romans explicitly states this, saying "For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The verse above states that created things cannot separate us from the love of God, therefore I cannot separate myself from the love of God, either! Also, in John , Jesus tells us "And I give eternal life to them; and they shall never perish, and no one shall snatch them out of My hand.
My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. Notice the picture here. You are being held in Jesus' hand, and in the Father's hand. Cup one of your hands over the other, as you would hold a frightened bird. That is the way God holds onto you.
We believe as Christians that we are in a better position than before we were saved. Remember, there is nothing we can do to merit salvation, it's all a work of God. Also remember, God predestined us to our salvation Eph. Would God make a mistake? No, I think the evidence clearly supports the view that your salvation is secure. That thought should be comforting in times of doubt.
Now, I don't want to mislead you. There are several passages which, when read alone, may lead you to believe that you could lose your salvation Heb , etc. Paul was addressing the saved about spies from the Temple stating that they were Christians that were among their midst and trying to get the saved to go to the Temple and participate in sacrifices. Paul was stating that it was impossible to "Fall Away" Just wanted to ask you a question RJ, even if it be hypothetical.
What if a person truly repented of his sins and accepted Jesus as Savior and later on say maybe yrs. The Assurance of your salvation Even though those that are bought will have eternal life, the proces of sanctification is on going, due to the fact they, we, are still in the human body, Flesh , we, they can have the assurance of eternal life based on what the word of God says, "Romans There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit".
I so much like that small little word "Now". It's clear understanding that the now is present for the believer as he or she is living and breathing but is also representive as we are to stand before Christ in our judgment. Even though those that are bought will have eternal life, the proces of satification is on going, due to the fact they,we, are still in the human body, Flesh ,we, they can have the assurance of eternal life based on what the word of God says,"Romans There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit".
Last edited: Jul 22, I was compelled to vote no. You were already dead when you first believed you came alive. Eph made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions Col Having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead. Our salvation is not contingent on what we do before or even after we have been saved because we are counted righteous from the moment because of what Jesus did.
Christ took our penalty for sin and we were assigned His righteousness by our faith. Clearly, this means that a believer cannot lose or forfeit salvation. Scripture gives us examples of believers who sinned in major ways yet remained in God's family. Consider the following:. Peter denied he even knew Christ Luke , but Jesus later restored and forgave Peter, demonstrating that Peter still belonged to Jesus despite his grievous sin. Ananias and Sapphira were believers who sinned and were judged on earth but remained saved eternally Acts Peter said to Ananias in Acts that he lied not only to men but also to the Holy Spirit, Who Peter said was dwelling in Ananias' heart.
This was proof of his salvation and righteousness by faith Romans , yet Ananias was judged sternly by God on earth for his sin. The unnamed believer in 1 Corinthians was punished temporally again, on earth yet was still saved and his spirit welcomed into God's presence, as Paul affirmed in v. These examples prove that our sin does not separate us from God, as Paul says in Romans 8. Nevertheless, our actions as Christians do have other consequences, both here and in eternity.
As the examples above attest, God requires that we discipline those in the church who continue in a life of sin. Matthew gives clear instructions as to how sinning believers are to be handled. Ultimately, if they refuse to stop sinning, we are to put them out of the church.
Physical death the separation of the soul from the body , which affects humankind as the result of Adam's sin charged to our account Romans Spiritual death the separation of the soul from God , a condition transmitted to us from Adam through our ancestors Ephesians ,5.
Eternal death the culmination and extension of spiritual death , the eternal separation of the soul from God in the lake of fire Revelation Scripture describes our condition before believing in Jesus Christ as being under the wrath of God:. It is both negative and positive Colossians , for we are saved from a lost condition our sins are forgiven , and we are brought into a saved condition that provides the believer with several dozen positive blessings the moment we trust Christ.
These blessings are very comprehensive, for our "salvation includes every divine undertaking for the believer from his deliverance out of the lost estate to his final presentation in glory conformed to the image of Christ.
Regeneration , which is an instantaneous work of the Holy Spirit in originating a new nature in the believing sinner so as to transform the believer from a state of spiritual death to spiritual life cf. John , ,28 ; 1 John Justification , by which God declares the believer righteous since clothed in the righteousness of Christ Romans Freed from the domain and dominion of sin Romans Given as a gift from the Father to the Son John Placed as a member in the spiritual body of Christ , the church 1 Corinthians Can a Christian lose his salvation?
Can a person once saved, having received God's free gift of eternal life and having been born into the family of God, again return exactly and completely to the position of being a lost and guilty sinner in the eyes of God? Of course not! The very nature of the spiritual life that has been received—eternal—and the Divine Source and Agent of that life—God—forbid drawing the conclusion that a saved person can ever again be lost.
This Biblical doctrine that a person who has received Jesus Christ, been born into the family of God, and justified by faith, can never again be lost is sometimes called eternal security.
