How do bad sectors happen

When the computer or other device reads corrupted data it's not sure what to do with it or what to make of it. The file corruption may affect only the sector or the entire cluster depending on the severity of the error. If the corruption is not severe a computer may be able to recover all or part of the corrupted data. Physical impact, repeated use and electrical failure can break part of a storage device's memory and render it unusable.

Bad sectors and clusters born from hardware damage are typically permanent; however, instead of breaking the entire device, the storage device can mark the damaged sectors and clusters as bad units and just not use them for storage -- the difference reduces the device's capacity by just a few kilobytes.

The data stored in a damaged sector or cluster might be recoverable if the computer reads over it several times. Windows has two built-in tools that can identify and sometimes recover bad sectors and clusters. Locate the hard drive in File Explorer, right-click on it, select properties, open the "Tools" tab and click "Check. Crumple and tear the paper, and you have to replace it — hard. If you have been lucky enough to repair bad sectors in this way you can free them up by doing another Chkdsk.

You can do this after getting rid of viruses and other malware, getting rid of junk files, defragging and getting everything else in working, clean order.

It takes about the same length of time to do this Chkdsk, so I do mine before bed and check the log in the morning. Bad sectors is never a good sign, and more often than not, it is unable to be repaired. Some friend of mine told me that it is a hard disk bad sector error and that the hard disk needs to be changed. What do i do now ….. I think we should discuss about physical bad sector and how do we repair it…!!!! The contents of these sectors were moved to the spare area.

The drive found bad sectors during its self test. There are weak sectors found on the disk surface. They may be remapped any time in the later use of the disk. It is recommended to examine and replace the cables if possible. At this point, warranty replacement of the disk is not yet possible, only if the health drops further. Problems occurred between the communication of the disk and the host times. It is recommended to examine the log of the disk regularly.

All new problems found will be logged there. Because of the above, improper shutdowns of the OS will not and cannot cause bad sectors. This would surely do the needful.

I had this problem and also Dvd drive failure, Corrupted Windows. From the next day, it is not getting detected in the system. If you have bad sectors in your hard disk, running a program such as Microsoft CHKDSK or ScanDisk and performing excessive attempts to read the disk can make matters worse.

Your best chance of successful recovery of your data is to take your drive to a data recovery specialist and allow them to examine the disk. I thought there mst be problem in operating system,i tryed to install windows 8 again on my lapi, but installation is always stuck on loading screen i. Thanks for the good article.

Unlike many on the net, it is honest. The explanation offered was even more ridiculous, implying some magical, vibrating magnetic fields were used. I have had power surges cause bad sectors on a drive, too. They usually differ from the most common by not increasing in number over time, the sure sign that the drive is dying and needs to be replaced. If the number does not increase, partitioning around the bad area works well. Pablo Zacheo, Not going to happen. That junk software only unmarks the clusters so that they look normal to the system.

If they are readable, the data is then accessible. That can happen at times, sometimes due to simple factors like temperature. I have gb hdd with 4 partitions. In partition c when i check for error I found that i have 8 kb bad sectors in the c: drive.

All other partition have no error. I have followed the process. Everything is working fine but when i check for effor it is showing that error. Sector corruption can lead to permanent loss of data, and even a complete system failure, so it pays to be cautious with any mission critical data. This typically happens if the disk is bumped as data is being written to it, exposure to extreme environmental conditions, or faulty mechanical parts.

Hard bad sectors can't be repaired, the only option you have is to save your data and replace the disk. Soft bad sectors occur when an error correction code on a sector doesn't match the content of the same sector. This is usually due to some kind of logical error on the disk caused by virus or malware corruption or failing to shut down the operating system properly, rather than a physical problem.

Prevention is always easier than a cure when it come to data recovery. The best way to avoid bad sector problems is to take good care of your computer. This means:. Make sure your computer is located in a well-ventilated, cool, dry area of your home, away from direct sunlight and ideally in a relatively low-traffic area.

If you're moving your desktop computer, take care to pack it properly, ideally in the manufacturer's original packing material. Be careful when carrying your laptop from one destination to the next. While they're reasonably sturdy, a significant bump to your computer can damage the hard drive and create bad sectors. Make sure the fan that cools your hard drive is working properly and that the air filter is unclogged. If you suspect that you have problems with sector corruption, back up your files and replace the disk as soon as possible.
